After going through security in JFK I had about two hours until the flight left at 630pm. We didn’t leave until 11pm. First there were about 5 gate changes. That happened because they brought out the wrong plane, gave us the correct one, and then brought us the original wrong one. Once on board a cargo strap broke and they had us wait another two hours. Because of all the delays we were on track to miss out connecting flight from Brussels. We called SATO travel and they said that the next flight wouldn’t leave until Friday. This was Wednesday. American Airlines luckily set us up with a hotel and Peace Corps gave each group leader some money to give out to their group. So, things were looking up.
By the by, Belgium was awesome! We got set up at the Sheraton across the street from the airport. After we got checked in and showered we were given a buffet lunch at the hotel, which was amazing. Cheese, meat, vegetables, chocolate cake, and cream cheese tarts!
We got off to a later start into the city then most had anticipated so we decided to skip the buffet dinner they were going to give us at 630pm. We took the train into Brussels which was only like 20 minutes. First thing we did was go to a place called Chocopolis. Free chocolate tasting, raspberry and cinnamon chocolate bars, and macaroons! Next, cathedral, beer and French fries, soccer hooligans, and the peeing statue. More beer at another bar, back to the hotel, beer at the hotel bar, dinner still set up, then sleep in the last western bed for 2 years and the last clean bathroom for 2 years.
